A family farm since the beginning of memory
The old road under the mountain still leads home.
Lontano sits on the Bemis Farm in South Tamworth, New Hampshire — white houses, a hayfield, and a long view toward Mount Whittier, kept by one family for generations and held in trust for the next ones.
The place
The farm gathers around a bend in the road: farmhouse and barns on one side, and up the hill the cluster the family calls Lontano — the Winter House and Summer House, the Ice House, the Wood Shed, and Sarah Ames Field running down to the tree line. Summers here are for haying, swimming, porch suppers, and the kind of repairs that become stories.
The Bemis and Perry families placed the farm in trust so it would outlast any one of us: the common lands and barns under The Farm Trust, established in 1987, and Lontano under its own family trust since 1996. Since 2018 a conservation easement with the Lakes Region Conservation Trust protects the fields and woods from ever being developed.
The houses are simple and old, and that is the point. They ask a little work of everyone and give back mornings with fog in the field, loons on the pond down the road, and the ridge going blue at dusk.
